Thirty of Hampshire’s top firms are based in Basingstoke. Sony, Automobile Association (AA), Barclays, Eli Lilly, Winterthur Life, and De La Rue are among the major companies in Basingstoke.
While in Basingstoke and Deane there are 6,400 businesses and 30 per cent of the residents are educated to degree level.
According to the Economic Prosperity Report compiled by the Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council, the largest sector is finance, IT, property and business support, which provides more than 26 per cent of jobs and has seen considerable increases in VAT registrations, business stock, jobs and enterprises over the last 10 years.
On the whole, the employment structure of the borough is relatively well balanced with 24 per cent of jobs are in the distribution, hotels and restaurants sector, five per cent in construction, five per cent in transport and communications, and 18 per cent in public administration, education or health.
Basingstoke and Deane provides between 75,000 and 80,000 jobs and is home to about 6,300 businesses. The strong manufacturing legacy is still present - though based around more sophisticated technology than the industrial engineering of the past – placing the borough within the top 10 authorities in the South East region for manufacturing jobs with 13 per cent of jobs in this sector (Source: Economic Prosperity Report, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council).
